Doing What You Love for Who You Love – Telisha Cobb

02 Aug Doing What You Love for Who You Love – Telisha Cobb

As a young adult, Telisha Cobb witnessed an event that has become all too familiar in the U.S.: her father’s job of 30 years was shut down and moved overseas, where labor is cheap and laborers are plenty. The hardship which followed, both in her family and in the community around her, drove Telisha to find a solution. And being an incredibly motivated self-starter, she resolved to start her own business. In 2011 she did just that with Nashville’s own Marathon Music Works.

As I walked into Marathon Music Works I felt a strange nostalgia. It is reminiscent of the venue I grew up going to in my hometown. Small, but not too small, with standing room only. The community of regular concert goers is always very welcoming and makes you feel like family. Through Marathon is where Telisha’s vision started to grow. Seeing how important local communities are to the culture of a city really became evident.

“As Nashville began to experience rapid growth, Marathon began to thrive.” But as Telisha sees it big growth comes with “Big Business.” Corporations with a lot of money, and a lot of brand recognition started coming in, which was a concern for Telisha. And for a lot of people. She wanted to maintain the Nashville we all know and love. So she began searching for solutions, and after a lot of “what if’s,” she found one.

Telisha started an independent business alliance in Nashville called Indie Nash. And with that, “what if” turned into “we are.” Indie Nash is not only focused on maintaining community among local businesses, but also contributing to and supporting the local economy. Indie Nash is all about “people doing what they love, with the people they love, for the people they love.”
